Hello! I'm Seetha Lakshmi. India, my country is home to diverse cultures and traditions. There are plenty of rituals followed in my country. I'll start with what I know, which is really very little. I'm also open to any corrections and extra information regarding my posts. I just want to decode the inner, spiritual, philosophical and / or scientific meaning behind these. Since I'm not an expert on the subject, I'll be taking the help of my family elders and others outside of the family and also referring to the internet and some books. So kindly bear with me in case of any mistakes and please correct it patiently, as you would, with a small child taking its first step.
In our country we fold our palms, that is bring them together when greeting someone. One, it is a sign of humility, that is it means we consider everyone our equal at least from the soul point of view. Next a form of respect. When we greet people who are our seniors agewise, we touch their feet.
I always thought why can't we just say it instead of folding the hands together? When in temples, we fold the hands and raise them above our head. It has a scientific meaning too! :-) It increases our focus and in some way connects us with the Divine Consciousness, or the spirits of living or long gone sages or saints. It is also a sign of total surrender and gratitude. It also reduces the chance of infections that could in some ways get transmitted through a handshake!
This is what I gathered as of now. If I stumble upon more, I'll share those immediately.
Till then,
Namaste! :-)
Everyone's Friend,
Seetha Lakshmi! :-)
